Equity benchmarks started off the week on a strong note, with the Nifty rising over five-month closing high on Monday aided largely by TCS, Infosys and HDFC Bank. GST Council's approval to law for compensation to states and positive global cues also supported the market that gained strength in afternoon trade after consolidation in morning.
The Sensex rising 192.83 points to 28661.58. The Nifty gained 57.50 points at 8879.20. Over all 1719 shares advanced against 1151 declining shares on the BSE. The Indian Rupee closed higher by 3 paise at 66.97.

The broader markets smartly outperformed benchmarks, rising over a percent on positive breadth. The BSE Mid-cap Index closed up 121 points at 13514, BSE Small-cap Index jumped up 91 points at 13589 while Bank Nifty hiked 125 points at 20677. in Commodity market, Gold slipped 124 points to 29,236 and Silver declined 197 points to 42,740.
