Equity benchmarks managed to eke out modest gains amid consolidation on Friday, supported by technology stocks and positive global cues. Investors awaited corporate earnings and December industrial output data due later today. For second consecutive session, the Nifty surpassed 8800-mark in early trade but failed to sustain that level. The NSE closed at 8793.55, up 15.15 points from its previous close while the Sensex closed up 4.55 points at 28334.
BSE Mid-cap index showed some weakness and closed at 13468.41 levels, down by 38.20 points or 0.28%. BSE Small-cap index closed at 13601.31 levels, up by 18.42 points or 0.14%. In Commodity market, Gold declined 105 points to 28,984 and Silver dropped 131 points to 41,900.
Asian Market Update: Asian markets finished mixed as of the most recent closing prices. Japan's index Nikkei 225 gained 471 points at 19378, Hang Seng hiked 49 points at 23574 and Shanghai Composite closed up by 14 points at 3197.
